Fuel Club Conference

One day fuel club conference with speakers and workshops in Gwendraeth Valley

  • Organiser: Menter Cwm Gwendraeth Elli
  • Type: Workshop
  • Location: Gwendraeth Valley
  • Duration: 1 day
  • Budget: £160

Event Summary

The conference was centred around oil clubs because of the majority of households in the area being off-gas.

In the morning, the session focused on fuel club issues whereby attendees were given the opportunity to present their experiences. This initiated discussions and best practice approaches to take to resolve or improve issues that were raised, including slow deliveries in winter periods and the higher costs of oil when smaller delivery lorries are used for better access to properties. As there were representatives from fuel clubs and oil companies present, it was a really productive and way of giving people answers, suggestions and resolutions.

Before lunch a presentations were given by representatives from West Wales Credit union on fuel accounts, NEST (Welsh government scheme) and the support that can be provided by Community Energy Wales. All covered topics about what services are offered, assistance available and the successes experienced.

In the afternoon after lunch, an open questions and answers session was help so that attendees could ask questions to oil supply companies. This helped attendees to understand the way that they work and helped to build better relationships between the company and consumer. Some of the things discussed were that during cold winter months many oil supply companies push up their margins, which inflates the price of oil to the consumer. Attendees were told which companies don’t do that and offer a flat rate; therefore, raising awareness of what to look out for and to be aware of.

Budget £160

To organise the event we had to hire the venue and pay for the lunch and refreshments. In total, the event cost £160 to organise. This was broken down in to the following things:

What format did the event take?

The event was organised as a 'fuel club conference' that ran from 10am – 2pm. The agenda was organised to have speakers to discuss oil buying clubs, oil companies, credit unions, the NEST scheme and Community Energy Wales.

A buffet was provided at lunchtime and tea and coffee before the conference started and throughout the breaks.

How was the event promoted?

As the conference was targeted at members of fuel clubs, the conference was promoted over social media on the fuel club Facebook page. The conference was also promoted through the use of posters in the weeks up to the event. There were also updates given in meeting that were held prior to the event that gave people the relevant details to attend or to pass on to those who would.

Attendee Feedback & Outcomes

The conference was attended by 18 people in total, 13 people from the surrounding communities in the area and the remaining 5 were from stakeholders and community agencies.
